Long Dan Xie Gan Tang History

Long Dan Xie Gan Tang translates as Gentiana Decoction to Drain the Liver. Though was first recorded in the 17th century by Wang Ang, it can be traced back to an earlier time when an herbalist prescribed this formula to the Empress Dowager Ci Xi. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, fire in the Liver can manifest as various infectious and inflammatory disorders along the Liver meridian. The formula is named after the most important ingredient, long dan cao, which effectively drains the fire from the Liver.

Long Dan Xie Gan Tang Ingredient Functions

Long Dan: an herb that clears excess internal heat and regulates digestion

Huang Qin: an herb that treats conditions caused by excess heat

Zhi Zi: a bitter fruit that releases heat, dispels toxins, and helps ease irritability

Ze Xie: an herb that relieves painful urination, stops diarrhea, and reduces dizziness

Mu Tong: an herb that promotes healthy urination and eases irritability

Che Qian Zi: a sweet seed that promotes healthy urination and lowers blood pressure

Di Huang: a root that clears internal heat and relieves dryness
